A talk shaped around who is in the room
Lone Star staff will come and talk to your group about bleeding disorders — in person anywhere in South Texas, or online if you are further out.
Raising awareness is one of the few things that reaches people we would never otherwise meet. Most people have never heard of von Willebrand disease, and the CDC puts it at up to one percent of the population. The distance between how common it is and how little it is known is the whole reason we do this.
What we cover depends entirely on who is listening.
Students
What a bleeding disorder is, how it is treated, and what a career in hematology or the nonprofit world actually looks like. HOSA chapters and health science classes are our most frequent audience.
School nurses and staff
How to recognize a student who is bleeding more than they should, what to do when one is in your office, and how to support a student who already has a diagnosis.
Clubs and community groups
Who we are, who we serve across South Texas, and why a condition most people have never heard of is worth an hour of your meeting. Rotary clubs, women’s organizations and the like.

What has come of them
Two things that happened because somebody sat in a room and listened.
A student went to shadow a hematologist
One high school presentation ended with a student asking how a person gets into the field. They arranged to shadow a local hematologist.
Someone found out why they were bleeding
At another, a person recognized themselves in what they were hearing. They turned out to have a bleeding disorder that nobody had diagnosed.

There is no cost. Tell us who your group is, roughly how many people, and whereabouts you are — and whether you would rather we came in person or joined you online. We will take it from there.
If you only need materials rather than a speaker — a packet for a school nurse, something for an emergency department or a dental practice — ask for those instead. It is a shorter form and we can post you printed copies.
