Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month

Every March. A month of red shirts, proclamations and families telling their own stories.

A national health observance

Every March, the community says it out loud

Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month is when families living with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and the rare factor disorders talk publicly about something they spend the other eleven months simply getting on with — the lives, the stories, the setbacks and the wins.

WhenEvery March

March has been Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month since 2016, when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services designated it a national health observance. Before that it was Hemophilia Awareness Month — a designation President Ronald Reagan confirmed in March 1986.

Texas made it its own in 2019. State Representative Tom Oliverson authored House Bill 1508, recognizing March as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month in Texas and giving the month a way to rally support for the research and the resources that change the outlook for people living with these conditions.

Six things you can do

Ways to mark it

Awareness on its own does not pay for anything. These do.

Give

A donation during March funds the education, advocacy and assistance programs that run all year.

Donate

Speak up

Access to treatment is decided by people who need to hear from families. It takes one letter to start.

Take action

Ask your city to say it too

Councils and county commissioners can proclaim March where you live. This is the template to hand them.

Ask us to come and talk

We will speak to a school, a workplace or a clinic. March is when people are most ready to listen.

Come to the conference

The Texas Bleeding Disorders Conference runs every summer, held jointly with Texas Central Bleeding Disorders.

Walk with us

The Unite Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year, and you do not need to raise a dollar to come.

Shop the shirts

Red is the color of the month, and a shirt is the easiest way into a conversation you would otherwise have to start yourself. Ours are on Bonfire — tees, long sleeves, a raglan and a hoodie — and the store stays open all year.
